Happy rainy February, everyone! In an effort to best meet community needs, we are currently in the process of moving the library’s high-value or un-replaceable DVDs to a “permanent reserve” status. These are primarily documentary films, many of which were purchased at the request of faculty for classroom showings. They will be kept with other reserves behind the information desk. This change will enable us to allow community members to now check out feature films!
The Short Version: High cost or difficult to replace DVDs will now be stored behind the information desk with other reserves. They can still be checked out by any Gold Card holder.
What does this change mean for faculty?
These films will still be discoverable in the online catalog and can still be checked out by any Gold Card holder. Faculty members are welcome to browse the collection behind the desk. These films will also still be able to be placed on academic reserve.
Why change at all?
Circulation of the DVD collection at the library has dropped significantly with the rise of streaming services. As they are no longer in high demand, we wanted to increase the availability of feature films to other members of our community, specifically community borrowers. We divided the collection so that these feature films would be more widely available, while the more difficult to replace films would have a greater level of security.
